How Calmness Leads to Better Decision-Making

Decision fatigue is a difficult reality for many entrepreneurs. The sheer volume of choices that need to be made every day when you run your own business can be overwhelming if you don’t have a strategy to handle it. When we’re unbalanced, it means that our mind has taken over, and it’s in total fight or flight mode. We lose track of our instincts and react rather than act, leading to poor decision-making. Below, we discuss how calmness as a leader can lead to a better decision-making strategy.

Find Your Intuition

Finding your intuition is the first step to making a calm, rational decision. Self-awareness is a critical trait of being a functioning person and an even bigger part of being a high-functioning entrepreneur. It’s important to understand yourself well enough to know when you’re feeling off-center. The better you know yourself, the faster and easier it’ll be to know if you’re in the right headspace for decision-making. Even if you aren’t feeling particularly stressed out, take a moment and check in with yourself before you make any decisions, large or small.

Listening to your intuition will eventually become second nature.

Allow Yourself Time to Check In

Your intuition doesn’t do much good if you don’t have time to listen to it. If things are feeling off in your headspace try to postpone your big decisions until you can find a little clarity. Take a break and recenter yourself. Do a quick meditation or take a walk around the block.

Decisions can often feel like they need to be made on the spot, when in reality that usually isn’t the case. Almost all choices, big or small, can stand a few minutes of contemplation. In the end the only thing that really matters is making the right choice. The added decision-making time will be worth it.

Avoid Overthinking

While taking a moment or two to consider your decision is a helpful tool, thinking too much on a decision can lead to making no decision at all. Don’t distract yourself with other tasks or issues. By keeping your attention on the present, you can focus on the current task or decision.

Researchers have found that just a few minutes of meditation can ground you in the present tense and calm your mind. This allows you to make better decisions because you can gain clarity on the situation and choices at hand.

Some people claim to thrive in chaos, but very few successful entrepreneurs will tell you that chaos is a sustainable way to do business. Grounded, rational decisions are the path to not only lasting success but a fulfilling life.
